Dr. edward adamson hoebel proposed that the law performs four specific functions that are imperative for most societies to maintain prosperity, known as, law. The first is to delineate relationships among groups or individuals in a civilization. This function establishes social expectancies so that groups or individuals know their constraints within a relationship. The second function is the allocation of authority and the decision of who may exert physical retribution as a socially acknowledged right. As well as a selection of what the most adequate forms of physical sanction. The third function is the disposition of trouble cases as they arise. The final function is to redesign relations between individuals or groups as the environment and circumstances change.
