Emotions: brief, specific, multidimensional responses to challenges or opportunities that are important to our goals, especially our social goals. Usually lasts seconds or minutes, not hours or days. Appraisal process: patterns of construal by which we evaluate events and objects in our environment according to their relation to our current goals. Fast, automatic appraisals of whether an event is consistent or inconsistent with our goals leads to general pleasant or unpleasant feelings. Further appraisals transform the initial feelings into more specific emotions. Subjective feelings: the qualities that define what the experience of a particular emotion is like, described with words, narratives. Specific actions and behaviours caused by the emotions. Feelings of anger can prompt behaviour that restores social justice when we perceive the world to be unfair. Emotions are strongly influenced by values, roles, institutions, and socialization practices across cultures.
