Chapter 2: prenatal development and the newborn period. He believed in epigenesis: the emergence of new structure and functions in the course of development. We all originate from a single cell which came to be by the union of two highly specialized cells (sperm and egg). Gametes (germ cells): reproductive cells egg and sperm that contain only half the genetic material of all the other cells in the body. They are produced through meiosis, cell division where the eggs and sperm receive only one member from each of the 23 chromosome pairs. Woman form all the eggs during prenatal development, while men produce vast numbers of new sperm continuously. An egg moves from one ovary to the fallopian tube. As it travels through the tube to the uterus, it attracts sperm to come. Once a sperm penetrates the outer membrane of the egg, the membrane is sealed and sperm cannot enter.
