Introduction: every culture seeks to find the meaning of human existence, in african cultural heritage, life and death are seen as bestowed by the creator. Death is inevitable: many origin stories circulate regarding the origins of death. The lizard who carried the message of mortality outran the chameleon that carried orders of immortality. In other stories, the humans had a choice between mortality and immortality. They chose death because it conformed to the essential condition of mankind . A nupe myth said that originally there were just tortoises, stones and humans. None of these died but none of them could have descendants either. The tortoises and the humans asked god to grant them children. He warned them that they would then become mortal and they accepted. The stones, who never joined in on the appeal, remained immortal. The choice of mortality affirms our nature as human beings .
