Social movements: purposeful, organized groups striving to work toward a common goal: might be attempting to: Provide a political voice to those otherwise disenfranchised (ex. civil rights movements) Looks at the big picture focuses on the way that all aspects of society = integral to the continued health & viability of the whole. Focus on why social movements develop, why they continue to exist + what social purposes they serve. Ex. unions formed in the 19th century when the economy functioned to distribute wealth & resources in a manner that provided adequate sustenance for workers & their families. Observe that movements must change their goals as initial aims are met or they risk dissolution: critical. Focuses on the creation & reproduction of inequality. Interested in how social movements = generated through systematic inequality + how social change = constant, speedy & unavoidable. Inherent conflict in social relations drives social change.
