Chapter 8 - social dimension of mental illness. Mental illness: mental abnormality where person has strange behaviours (depression, schizophrenia, substance dependence, psychiatric disorder) Generations (3 periods of psychiatric epidemiology: 20th c ww11: 16 studies on informants and agency records to supply clinically relevant info. Diagnostic interview: focus on children and adolescents, comorbidity: co occurrence of one of more disorder. Current estimates of prevalence of disorder: canadian community health survey: examine prevalence of multiple mental disorders and health services, examine links b/w mental illness and other social factors. Income adequacy: measure of household income adjusts for number of people living in house. Explaining mental illness: personal/ psychological characteristic and biological factors. Lower income/education have higher risk for psychiatric disorder. Social selection: presence of disorder creating downward social mobility for individual. Social drift: intergenerational change where successive generation will be continually downwardly mobile.
