The birth and growth of buddhism came from the midst of hinduism. It helped to sharpen the identity and philosophy of both religions as they debated and engaged in dialogue over many centuries. Other encounters took place as well in the vast indian sub-continent. There are about 150 million muslims in india with many more millions in the former parts of india that since 1947 are now pakistan and bangladesh. The encounter between hinduism and islam is a long and difficult story that does(cid:374)(cid:859)t see(cid:373) to (cid:271)e (cid:373)o(cid:448)i(cid:374)g (cid:395)ui(cid:272)kly to(cid:449)a(cid:396)ds a happy e(cid:374)di(cid:374)g. There had long been peaceful trade relations between the people of india and those of the middle east. There was an important immigration movement to india from the lands to its west. Since the 8th century, muslims began to make raids into the subcontinent. They looted palaces and temples, defaced the images of gods and took items made of precious metals.
