In 2015, a group of physicians initiated a court challenge to a regulatory requirement which obliges them to offer effective referrals in non-emergencies and provide emergency services, despite any religious or conscience objections they might have. Their argument is that their rights to freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, and equality under the charter supersede any professional obligations they might otherwise have in the care of patients. Argument is that physicians are the gatekeepers to abortion and contraception, and as it stands, there is a lack of government leadership and support in ensuring equal access for women in canada.
