PHYL 1010X Chapter Notes -Cortisol, Hypothyroidism, Aldosterone
Document Summary
Figure 23 12 illustrates how a goiter can occur with both hyper and hypothyroidism: thyroid gland has 2 distinct endocrine cell types, c cells which secrete calcitonin, follicular cells which secrete thyroid hormone, not essential for life, but affect quality of life, tsh controls the thyroid gland. Growth hormone: normal growth is a complex process that depends on a number of factors, gh & other hormones, an adequate diet, absence of chronic stress, genetics, gh is anabolic. Figure 23 16 describes how bones grow longer: requires the proper hormones & adequate amounts protein & calcium, bone is a dynamic, living tissue constantly being formed and resorbed (broken down, bone growth occurs when matrix is deposited faster than it is resorbed, occurs at specialized regions called epiphyseal plates, as the collagen layer thickens, older cartilage/cells degenerate (cid:224) osteoblasts invade, osteoblasts lay down bone matrix on top of cartilage base.
