PSYO 2220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Circadian Rhythm, Insomnia, Benzodiazepine
Document Summary
Medical treatments are the most common for insomnia. 29 % of people with insomnia use prescribed or over the counter medication. People that seek a professional are most likely to be prescribed benzodiazepines. There are new medications that involve the melatonin system starting to be used. Medical treatments are not intended for long-term use. For sleep apnea, cpap is used to increase airflow/breathing. Phase delays/advances, involves the person on changing the bedtime of a patient. This helps regulate the biological clock, but the drawback is that the person has to go to bed on the day for several days. In other instances people are exposed to bright light places, this seems to help reset the circadian rhythm. Parasomnias are characterized by events that occur during sleep, such as: sleepwalking, sleep talking, teeth grinding, nightmares, excessive twitching, etc . Nightmares are thought to be influenced by genes, trauma or medication.
