Behaviour is motivated by deficiency motives and growth motives. Maslow postulated that there was a universal hierarchy or stage-like sequence of human needs: the needs progress from basic health and safety needs required for survival to the upper level needs for love, esteem, and self- actualization. Higher level needs emphasize self-completion and self- development through realizing potentials that we may not know we have.
