Conduction: the movement of an electric signal within a neuron, from the dendrites to the cell body, then through the axon. Transmission: the movement of electric signals from one neuron to another over the synapse. These stages are what scientists generally refer to as the electrochemical action of neurons. The neuron"s cell membrane has small pores that act as channels to allow small electrically charged molecules, called ions, to ow in and out of the cell. It is this ow of ions across the neuron"s cell membrane that creates the conduction of a signal within neuron. The resting potential: the origin of the neuron"s electrical properties. By contrast, there is a high concentration of positively charged sodium ions (na+) and negatively charged chloride ions (cl-) outside the neurons cell membrane: more cations(+) outside and anions(-) on the inside. The myelin sheath facilitates the conduction of the action potential.
