Sympathetic nervous system is known to respond to stress with fight or flight. General adaptation syndrome (gas) by hans selye salivary cortisol: 3 stages, the alarm stage (acute stress) initial brief adaptive response (fight or flight) to the stressor. The body cannot differentiate between positive and negative stimuli: lazarus and folkman suggest that: Distress: stress caused by negative factors which result in anxiety, depression, confusion, helplessness, hopelessness, and fatigue (i. e. , death in the family, financial overload, school/work demands) Eustress: stress caused by positive factors that result in happiness, hopefulness, and purposeful movement (i. e. , vacations, birth of a baby, buying a new car) Serotonin is a brain catecholamine hat plays an important role in mood, sleep, sexuality, appetite, and metabolism. Main neurotransmitter in depression: medications used to treat depression increase serotonin levels.
