SOCI-1015EL Chapter 5: Sociology-Society Social Structure and Interaction
Document Summary
[functionalist perspective] we have social structure because it creates order, predictability, pushes human development and allows us with a map to interpret social situations. Changing their setting or losing structure will leave a person feeling unsure how to function. [conflict perspective] society is based off of hierarchies. Social structures create boundaries between insiders and outsiders, creating social marginalization. Status carries expectations, but don"t pertain necessarily to individuals, but a general perception of a title. Status is a term often used for high ranking individuals but that"s inaccurate. We are a collection of our status. Achieved statuses could be good or bad (mom/thug) Ascribed statuses could affect later achievements and prestige (women and minorities are often subject to prejudices) Our general social position is based off of our master status, often based on a profession and wealth, sometimes race (carol is a mom and stripper but she"s defined only by her profession)
