Document Summary

Object relations theories: the object is another person, focusing on the individuals relations to others. Deri(cid:448)es fro(cid:373) freud"s co(cid:374)cept of ego cathexis-bond from the ego to external object, to release id energy. In object relations, the bond is the fundamental ego function, not satisfying the id. All object relations theories emphasize the persons pattern of relationships, which is determined in childhood and that these patterns are maintained for life. Child experiences conflict of wishing to be taken caring of and desiring selfhood; how the mother acts will determine later adjustment- a mother who is too little present will cause rejection, be available but nudge independence. At 3 the child has a stable representation of mother (internalized image is omnipresent)- child begins to generalize relationship with mother and father to other adults. We do not notice the similarities in our behaviour patterns towards others, so we see each interaction as unique.
