Foucault proposed there are multiple ways of understanding any social phenomenon; the understandings which emerge from those in power become widely accepted (called elite discourse) (femininity and masculinity in terms o personality/traits) Through socialization elite discourses become deeply ingrained and difficult to change. Sex: biological characteristics that include sex chromosomes, primary and secondary sex characteristics determined at birth. Gender refers to the expected and actual thoughts, feelings and behaviours associated with a certain sex, within a certain culture at a given point in history. Dualism: euro-canadian culture uses this for sex; two opposing categories (male and female) Because sex is based on dualism, gender is assumed to be as well. Dualism also refers to attraction: heterosexuality and homosexuality.
