Document Summary
Chapter 13: periodic patterns in main-group elements. However, monatomic halide ions (x-) are common & stable, whereas h- is rare & reactive + h has lower electronegativity. Ionic (salt-like) hydrides: with very reactive metals; forms white, crystalline solids composed of metal cation and hydride ion: 2li + h2 2lih. In water, h- is strong base that pulls h+ from surrounding h2o molecules to form h2. Trends across period 2 elements: electrons fill 1 ns and 3 np orbitals according to pauli"s exclusion principle & hund"s rule, as nuclear charge increases, atomic size and metallic character decreases. Hf: diagonal relationship: second and third periods have similar chemistry to one column to right. Chemical properties: ns1, 1+ oxidation state to form e+ ion, atoms have largest size and lower ie & electronegativity in period, down group, atomic and ionic size increase, whereas ie and x decrease.
