Early explorers showed a lot of bravado/immaturity, seemed stupid to inuit. Kept coming back to find a mythical passage/marvel @ savages . Came to arctic unprepared, had rude awakening. Yet voyages did open arctic up, reveal the riches of its ecosyst. Inuit were accustomed to extreme/unforgiving environment, thus grateful for the. Land was sacred bc it kept inuit alive, knew it could refuse to provide for them @ Knew could not fight nature--instead, followed her laws everyday any time. Whalers began to arrive in mid 1800"s. Employed inuit to work on boats, which led to abandonment of migratory lifestyle and increased reliance on western goods. Accepted early on, largely bc for the goods they brought. When fur trade replace whaling, inuit employed as trappers by hbc. Hbc had virtual monopoly, but generally treated inuit w respect. Cath/anglican missionaries arrived abt same time as hbc. Saw traders as corrupting influence due to alcohol, etc.
