Incorporated anishinaabe spirituality thru x-ray form and spirit/power lines. Work deals both w tradition and contemp probs faced by indg ppls. Significant that he has no formal art education. Approaches art as a shaman, thus open to learning from diff kinds of spirituality. Had both early spiritual and catholic educations from grandparents. Grew up in time when indian act was even worse than it is now. Was sent to cath boarding school, experienced phys/sexual/emotional abuse. But did cause later problems w substance abuse. Returned home w/in 2 yrs, then attended community school, then dropped out to b/come shaman. At 19, b/came v sick, recieved name copper thunderbird . B/came his artist identity, signs paintings w/ it in syllabics. In mid-50"s, was in infirmary for tb.
