11/09 doxtater, reconnecting the past: an indian idea of history. Indg ppls only have hist in relation to white ppl. They are history, they don"t hav it. Indg art/history exhibitions are curated/sponsored by white experts . Romanticise indg ppls, gatekeep authenticity, ideas of noble savage/disappearing indian outside museums. Standard of authenticity in museums then sets standard for indg art. Museums would start programs to get indg ppls to copy items in their collections exactly, as some anthropological crusade to preserve authentic indg art methods, when indg artists" works reflected western innovation/modern life, museums were angry/even destroyed art. Done in large part due to western ideas of time/progress--things in the past are separate, must either b feared or nostalgically cherished. Indg artists/writers mix/juxtapose past/present--connections, not divisions, r. Need to place emphasis on continuity b/c of the way that past abuses connect 2 important present ones.
