Relies on romantic, noble savage idea of retribalism . Wampum belts are one of many complex, layered indg information systs. Needs constant upkeep, can"t just be quickly rewritten, like western hypertexts. Indg ppls hav always had cyberspace--a collected repository of shared memory. Space of interaction, inquiry, connection space btwn past/present, spiritual/material. No segmentation of time, as in the western tradition. Circular, nonhierarchical thinking is typical of indg nations/communities. Sign technology must b incorporated into indg conceptions of cyberspace. Western scholars unsuccessfully attempting to place indg concepts into west systs is nothing new. Indg scholars/artists can appropriate cyberspace and use it to articulate indg values, examine/create dialog abt issues of colonialism/globalization, give validation to indg ppls/identities/cultures in a new context.
