Document Summary

Reading: the common discourser of the whole natio. Jap sheppard was once the single most well known name from 18th century england. The oral history of sheppard has maintained his memory within human contexts where books were scarce and working class resources for an independent historiography were non-existent. He was born in white"s row, spitalfields on march 4. 1702 - the year that queen anne came to the throne. His mother placed him in a newly opened bishopsgate workhouse, he became an apprentice. Silk became the sign of idleness, artifice and deception. Accumulation of silk capital may be expressed as an increase in the volume of trade, which doubled between 1664 and 1713. Accumulation of capital meant accumulation of the proletariat. The labour force was free from apprenticeship and wage regulation, free as to the hours of work, free to quit, free to starve. The workhouses were institutions of incarcerations and places for punishment.
