02/22 greenberg, covenant: on the partnership of god and the human in history. Absolute faith in god is not ideal. Judaism balances responsability of god/humans thru covenant. God has b/come more hidden as humans hav matured. Thus humans take more responsibility for history. All humans r free to work towards the perfection of the world. God designated jews as pacesetters in this venture. Jews r lead partners--start w/ them and work outward 2 bring abt messianic era. Howev, this does not degrade the importance of other religs. This syst also grows relationship btwn jews/non-jews. But the covenant does not shield jews from history/suffering. God wants service from love given freely/from the dignified. Covenant is upheld even when god is not performing visible miracles. Brokenness is just another way of expressing compassion. Covenant is not simply quid pro quo/coercive. Affiliation/intermarriage indicate rise in individuality/breaking of the covenant. Tho commitment level of jews is higher than it appears.
