Speech and Language!
Generation of speech!
Modifications of tension in larynx, vocal tract, folds etc. creates changes in frequency and pitch.
People who have damage to larynx can still ‘speak’ using resonators against throat (upper
airway is intact). !
!
A lot of motor and premotor components going into production and planning of speech.
Understanding, however, is a separate process.!

!
Major brain areas involved in the comprehension and production of speech!
There are two central areas involved: Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas. !
!
Broca’s is responsible for planning of speech— translation of symbols into words, representation
of thoughts into words, etc. Kind of like pre-premotor region. !
!
Broca’s aphasia: Speech deficit where you can understand words, but have difficulty coming up
with words in production of speech. Not a motor deficit, rather a cognitive one. Observe proximity
of motor cortex.!
!
Wernicke’s is close to auditory cortex, involved in comprehension—processing of speech
sounds, translation into words and meaning. !
!
Wernicke’s aphasia: Deficit where you can hear words, but cannot extract semantic meaning
from them. Capable of producing speech (not a motor deficit), but will often produce ‘word
salads’ with little meaning. !
!
Note: perisylvian areas are near the sylvian fissure (lateral sulcus) Also have implications in
language and speech processing.!
!
Representation in cytoarchitecture map: 44/45 and 22. !
