Infancy to toddlerhood = birth to 2-year-old. Maximum growth period (apart from prenatal period of life): most changes. There are dramatic changes in body size and proportions during infancy and toddlerhood in 2 individuals: 1st year: head large in proportion to body and height & weight gain are especially rapid, 2nd year: lower body portion catches up, baby fat gained until ~9mnths, then gets limmer trend continues into middle childhood. Chapter 4. 1. 1 changes in body size and muscle-fat makeup. Infancy, girls are shorter and lighter than boys (higher ratio of fat to muscle) There are ethnic differences in body size: asian babies are typically under the american growth norms, african-american babies are typically over the american growth norms. Important for nursing because if asian baby is small or caucasian is big, used to think there was a problem now use cultural graphs/charts developed to measure baby.
