Document Summary
Chapter 5. 2. 1 structure of the information-processing system. We hold (3) parts of the mental system for processing: sensory register, working or short-term memory, long-term memory. Mental strategies used to operate on and transform information flowing through each of the systems mentioned above; increase the chances that we will retain information, use it efficiently and think flexibly, adapting the information to changing circumstances. Information process (in order: sensory register: Sights and sounds are represented directly and stored briefly: working or short-term memory: Actively apply mental strategies as we work on a limited amount of information. The more thoroughly we learn information, the more automatically we use it. Central executive: (conscious, reflective part of our mental system) directs flow of information; decides what to attend to, coordinates incoming information with information already in the system ; selects, applies and monitors strategies: long-term memory: Retrieval can be problematic (due to too much stored); solution = categorization of memories based on content.
