Document Summary

Alasdair macintyre examines varying points of view of morality, and discusses whether or not patriotism is a virtue. Patriotism is not the primary response of gratitude, but rather requital for benefits received. Morality and patriotism are incompatible: liberal morality is to judge from an impersonal standpoint; that is to say without external forces, such as nationality or circumstance, patriotism requires a partisan viewpoint, and devotion to one country. Each person accounts for one, while patriots would argue that one be willing to go to war for resources: conflicting ways of life: liberal patriots espouse neutrality between competing interests. Morality: liberal morality deems the where and whom questions irrelevant, an alternative account, more compatible with patriotism, contends that they emerge through some particular community. In the most tangible sense, we select actions that are moral specific to some social order. All real morality is in this sense. Classic morality seeks to create a disconnect between true morality and society based morality.
