-Economic crisis, crime crisis, suicide crisis, etc...
BUT positive statistics.
-The contrast between Mexico and North America is a big preoccupation.
-Differences: America is dominant, Mexico is dependent; America is one of the world’s
oldest democracies, Mexico is the world champion of one-party rule; Americans are im-
migrants, a majority of Mexicans have indian roots; Americans dream of the future, Mex-
icans hark back to the past.
-Moving closer together through NAFTA.
-Challenge for Mexico: growth.
There was the problem of pulling the country out of its crisis.
Question of longer term growth.
Question of proper democracy.
-Economy- growth and then crisis.
-Fear that the “market model” might be threatened.
-When problems arise, the solution is to deepen reforms.
-Coincidence of economic crisis with political instability. Political reforms needed.
