After ww2, su established brutal rule over countries of central and eastern europe: economics of central and eastern european countries were to a large extent nationalized and state bureaucrats planned economic activities in a centralized way. Communism failed dismally with regard to the economy, the environment, and basic freedoms. One military intervention threat of soviets vanished, each country to a somewhat different path. Solidarity, trade union led by lech walesa, popular among polish people: banned by the communist part.
