Poli212 nationalism ethnicity and power sharing reading notes. Nation: group of people who believe they are ancestrally related. Nationalism: identification with and loyalty to one"s nation. With increased migration within europe, the ethnic composition of european countries has become more complex. After disintegration of communism, international community had no immediate worries. 1990 before war broke out, 36% of people identify themselves as serbs and 20% croats. Ww2, power relation between croats and serbs changed drastically. After 1990, slovenia and croatia attempted to become independent countries. International principle of territorial integrity and self-determination: territorial integrity: international borers can be changed only by peaceful means and by common agreement, self-determination: all people who so desire have the right to a sovereign and independent state. Shortly after the beginning of hostilities, germany began to push for international recognition of slovenian and croatian independence. In slovenia, hostilities were never severe and came to a quick end.
