Beginning of 20th c. mexican and russian revolutions. End of 20th c. collapse of soviet union and chinese + vietnamese revolutions. No era in world history has seen more revolutionary upheaval. Communist revolutions have taken place almost exclusively in the developing world, fought primarily by the peasantry. Islamist movement has drawn support from a wide variety of social classes and groups. Many of developing world"s poor and oppressed along with numerous intellectual and alienated members of the middle class have found revolutionary ideologies appealing. Rapid and sweeping solutions to the problems of underdevelopment. End colonial rule, terminate dependency, protect national sovereignty, reduce social and economic inequalities, accelerate economic development, mobilize the population and transform the political culture. Some were able to deliver on a number of their promises. Often gains come at a great human cost. Some have little or nothing positive to show for all the loss. Currently isis has improved public services but instates a horrendous tyranny.
