Both sides prepared for armed combat: al leaders (except sheikh mujibur rahman) taken prisoners + fled to india underground to establish government of bangladesh (gobd) in. Bangladesh war: third between india and pakistan during 1st quarter century of independence + was neither expected nor judged necessary but was not unanticipated or a surprise. India and pakistan both had long-standing contingency plans for war: crisis escalated in summer 1971 but plan was to pursue interests in a short war.
