Influenced by ongoing bodily changes (biological rhythms) Changes in awareness can occur artificially, can be affected by social factors. Two components of consciousness | thalamus damage = vegetative state. Wakefulness: reticular formation | ^person is awake, not aware. Awareness: thalamus/cerebral cortex | ^norm sleep cycle/reflex; not coma. Daydreaming: altered form of consciousness, fantasy, person is awake. Most people daydream spontaneously, frequency stops w/age. Used to solve problems, rehearse a sequence of events, find new ideas. Some are deliberate attempts to deal w/situations by providing internal stimulation. Associated with changes in the ratio of several brain waves. Anesthetic depth: measured indirectly, respiratory rate and blood pressure; unreliable. A nesthetic awareness. surgical patients conscious during surgery (1/1000) Hear conversations, feel the pain, unable to tell bc paralysis. Bis): monitors (a) the type/percentage of brain waves (b) percentage of isoelectric analysis; quite effective.
