Social psychology chapter 2 the methods of social psychology. Cohen and nisbett study fictional job applicant who committed manslaughter: us south nicer than north, more acceptable for crime of honour. Social psychology research values: usually predictable - but mistakes and surprises, hindsight bias: tendency to believe that you could have predicted the outcome which in fact you could not, overconfident intuitive predictions, obvious in hindsight not foresight. Observational research: semiformal, sometimes misleading and can flaw, participants or not. Archival research: ex: nisbett and cohen studied fbi reports on homicides and found more in south and involved with insults. Experimental research: use random assignment, has control or neutral condition, ex: nisbett and cohen research on south us vs north us. Natural experiment: naturally occurring event having different conditions that can be compared with experiment where conditions are manipulated. Field experiment: experiment in the real world with participant unaware of being studied. Basic science: to understand phenomenon, use it to build theories.
