PSYC 215 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Muzafer Sherif, Solomon Asch, Social Influence
Document Summary
Social influence refers to the ways in which people are affected by the real and imagined pressures of others. Social influence as automatic : individuals seem to imitate each other automatically, experiment: two partners were placed together and one of them was a confederate. The confederate exhibited the habit of rubbing his face or shaking his foot. Before they watch the video, certain individuals were told that the woman was helpful while others weren"t. The ones that were told that the woman was helpful mimicked her lot more often than the ones that didn"t: a person"s mood can be affected even if they had never actually interacted with the speaker. Mood contagion : mimicry is a dynamic process, as when two people who are walking together or dancing become more and more coordinated over time. A small dote appeared for two seconds, after the participant were asked to estimate how far was the dot.
