Elaboration-likelihood model (elm) by petty& cacioppo 1980: a model of persuasion that states that there are two routes to persuasion: the central and the peripheral route. Heuristic- systematic model (hsm) by chaiken and eagly 1980: a model of persuasion that maintains that there are two routes to persuasion: the systematic and the heuristic route. Both models" core ideas are pretty much the same: the central/ systematic route: where people think carefully and deliberately about the message. Instead they focus on details like who wrote it, or the attractiveness of the message. ( autopilot ) Knowledgeable in the domain (the more we know the more thoughtfully we will analyse a message (to go through this route you must be motivated and able to engage in-depth processing) Incomplete or hard to comprehend message (if either is missing the message will go through the peripheral route) change. Motivation- personal interest; ability- how we process the message.
