Reading 20: further analysis of the hippocampal amnesic syndrome: 14. Year follow up study of hm brenda milner. Patient hm became amnesic following a bilateral removal of the hippocampal zone. He could acquire new motor skills and showed some evidence of perceptual learning. He achieved some retention of very simple visual and tactual mazes in which the sequence required is short enough to fit into his immediate memory span. Describes the persistent features of severe amnesic syndrome following bilateral mesial temporal lobectomy. Attempts to give further substance to our previously held belief that the patient"s perceptual and intellectual capacities remain intact normal or superior performance on a fairly wide range of experimental tasks. Exploring the nature of the memory deficit discovering which learning tasks the patient can master and those the patient fails. He has severe anterograde amnesia that persists. His mother noted a slight but distinct improvement during the past two or three years.
