PSYC 332 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Erving Goffman, Social Emotions, Social Animal
Document Summary
Acting is mostly about the performance of emotion --> convey emotion through behavior. Erving goffman: human behavior as a series of performances through which actors play roles and enact scripts in order to manage the impressions of other characters in the social scene. Personal front: each actor has unique manner of acting to the routine. Or rudiments of personality: basic dispositions of our respective personalities that we each bring as social actors to our social performances. Art of personality development involves expression and refinement of a uniquely personal and recognizable style of emotional performance. There is no developmental period in normal human life when the individual is not a social actor nor even the first minute after birth. Babies are social actors long before they realize they are social actors --> because we, the social audience, observe them to be. Mothers will observe at least basic emotions: joy, interest, fear, surprise, anger.
