Intellectual disability replaced the previous term mental retardation in the dsm-5. 3 essential elements: intellectual limitations, deficits in adaptive skills, and early onset. In the 19th century, it was believed that those with intellectual disability were the missing link between humans and lower species this is known as the evolutionary degeneracy theory. The theory was an explanation for insanity, mental deficiency, and social deviance. Eugenics (first described by galton) in 1883 was the science which deals with all influences that improve the inborn qualities of a race . There was a newfound need to protect society from those with intellectual disability. They were blamed for social problems and seen as lacking morality led to terms like moral imbecile and moron . Defining and measuring children"s intelligence and adaptive behaviour. In 1990, binet and simon (french educators) came up with an intelligence test, later known as the. Stanford-binet scale still used today measuring judgment and reasoning.
