Research = systematic way of finding answers to questions. Psyc 412 chapter 3 notes: organized way of investigating claims that improves on using common sense and casual observations; must also be based on theories backed up by data from well-designed studies. Facilitated communication who is communicating: pseudoscience, need to focus on quality of evidence, how it is obtained, and how it is presented. Science vs. pseudoscience scientists follow rules of science, are prepared to admit when they are wrong and are open to change based on new evidence. Hypothesis, observation, theory, examine previous findings, and decide general approach identify sample, select measurement methods, and develop research design and procedures gather and analyze data and interpret results. Common research questions/topics: nature and distribution of childhood disorders how disorders are defined, diagnosed and expressed; patterns of symptoms, base rates, and natural progression. Epidemiological research study of the incidence, prevalence, and co-occurrence of childhood disorders and competencies in clinic-referred and community samples.
