Little scholarly work has been done to assemble and analyze the information explaining the demographics of jews in amerca. Contemporary jewish studies have much more scholarly development to achieve before it reaches the same level as other branches of jewish studies. Jewish studies as intellectual discipline emerged in germany in the first half of the 19th century - where it became the science of judiasm. When it became the focus was on judaism in regards to the religious aspects, contemporary jewish studies has moved towards understand the culture - although religion is still incorporated. Individuals in social sciences began looking at jewish people, which was great change as it considered the jewish people to be like other groups within society - though never neglecting the past the jews experienced. Leader of russian jewry, baron david gunzberg, created the academy of jewish studies in 1909 and he was the one to bring "the science of judaism" to eastern europe.
