SOCI 211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Jaywalking, Concept Map, Semiotics
Document Summary
Research methods aim to link abstract ideas with empirical evidence. Although the traditional model of social science research focuses on quantitative data analysis techniques this is not the only approach ot make sense of social observations. Qualitative analysis - methods for examining social research data without converting them to numerical format is growing in interest again. The data used are wide and can include social artifacts, researchers" field notes, audio files, transcribed interviews, etc. Qualitative research involve interplay between data collection and theory. Observations are made and patterns are detected. Concepts and propositions are develo0ped to help understand the evidence which leads to more refined observations. Det4ecting patterns in a set of observations typically begins with a search for similarities and dissimilarities. The similarities researchers seek are patterns of interaction and events that are generally common to what they"re studying.
