SOCI 254 Chapter Notes -Agricultural Machinery, Intercropping, Human Capital
Document Summary
We say agriculture, population dispersed, population that are poor we have this tendency of defining the rural as being non-urban. Cities have schools, health centers etcc and the rural area in comparison seems deficient. Need to step away from that and define rural as something independent. What is typical about rural populations = not only agriculture, as there are a lot of other activities concentrated in rural areas. Talk about peasantries = in terms of international dvpt analysis, most of the poor in the world today are rural peasants. There are of course urban poors, but the large majority is rural. Control over land (who is the decision maker?) Rural life in general: great varieties of peasantries worldwide, the differences are in land endowmnent ,technology etc. , but there are commonalities, peasants produce for markets (want to sell their stuff) . These days are long done, probably nowhere in the world subsistence farmers.
