Wayward puritans: on the sociology of deviance, erikson. Crime draws people together in a common posture of anger and holds with high respect. They develop tight bonds of solidarity when a deviant individual violates rules that the rest of the society bring special sanctions to bear against the persons who exhibit it. The only way an observer can tell whether or not a given behavior is deviant, then, is to learn something about the standards of the audience which responds to it. It is by no means evident that all acts considered deviant in society are in fact harmful to group life; that many other activities considered deviant throughout the world have any relationship to the group(cid:495)s survival. For instance, prostitution/marijuana/homosexuality are often viewed as harmful to the social order. Thus, single encounters between the deviant and the community are only fragments of an ongoing social process. Witchcraft people who fear witches soon find themselves surrounded by them.
