Main point: there is a general stigma surrounding homelessness and drug abuse in which the problem is the user"s fault and a result of their choices. However, this chapter sheds light on this issue and illustrates that oftentimes these issues are a result of a person"s childhood experiences surrounding family life, violent parents, domestic abuse, family drug use/alcohol abuse and gangs. Most of the edgewater homeless grew up in poor or middle class families with violent or alcoholic parents. Compare their christmases, who received what gifts etc. Often had no contact with their family. Mothers always wanted to keep ties with their sons. Many lived on and off with their mothers, spent holidays, weddings, funerals etc. with their families. The first born son in his family. His mother continues to welcome him home despite his drug use and disappointment. He sold drugs out of her garage. Attended and comforted her during her fathers funeral.
