Establish the setting and the cultural context we will be studying (serves an introduction) To give readers a personal relationship with the travesties. Geertz: thick description - the idea of bringing the reader to the field with you through. Tried to eliminate the stigma surrounding the travesties: what are the stakes? (why should we care?) They identify as males however have female personas. Considered groundbreaking and different compared to societies standard definition of gen- der. The author can provide a better insight because he is also a gay male, whereas other re- searchers were female: evidence - holism, positional thinking, self-reflection, ethnography. Holism: telling us everything, showing the exciting, dirty, violence; providing information on a little bit of everything. Cultural relativism; giving an insight on life as a travesty through an open mind, laying ev- erything out so that the reader can judge for themselves. Ethnography; positioning himself as a gay male, providing a world view.
