Magic: refers to methods that somehow interface with the supernatural and by which people can bring about particular outcomes. May be used for pubic good or evil. Although recent anthropologists place magic within religion due to it"s associated with supernatural mechanism, past anthropologists often placed it in a separate category. Durkheim: focused on social context: magic is centered around the needs/desires of the individual vs religion which tends to involve the community. Rules of magic: magic ritual have a goal, whereas religious rituals such as baptism serve as an indication. Science is a methodology for coming to an understanding of out world thought objective observations =, experimentation and the development of hypotheses and theories. Science deals with only empirical observations and must provide testable conclusion. Law of sympathy: states that magic depends on the apparent association or agreement between things.
