General reading questions week 7: hiv / aids. Reading: washer chapter 3: the zoonotic source of hiv in humans that seem to be hypothesized are african green monkeys. It is now generally accepted on the basis of genetic evidence that the source of the two strains of hiv hiv-1 and hiv-2 are from similar monkeys, apes or chimpanzees. Further evidence for such a link comes from the fact the same geographic area were found to be closely related, which implicates hunting as a route of transmission. There is also evidence by direct blood and virus contact in health care and primate center workers. One reason why aids was not seen as a serious public health threat in the early years of the epidemic may have been because it was an infectious disease. Another difficulty in raising media interest related to who was affected.
