First glance it seems to be about geography: used to refer to a type of society, level of development. Historical not geographical construct: needs to be capitalized, industrialized, urbanized, secular and modern, arose after the ma and result of historical processes including econ, political, social, and cultural. Functions: allows us to characterize and classify into different categories. As societies emerged, the idea of the west was formed: emergence of enlightenment which was a eu affair, eu assumed itself the most advance society, eu man was the pinnacle of human achievement. East and west are different in their histories, ecologies, patterns of development, culture: measure short bc they are comparing to the w which is incomparable (too different) It is the difference between them which give each other meaning.
