Document Summary

Identify the types of mutation that can be found in dna molecules. Examine the mechanisms on which dna can be repaired. Understand how mutations can read to variation in the genome. Rna (have a delicate backbone, more prone to breakage) viruses have the highest rate of mutations, while human have a relatively low mutation rate. Mutations can arise due to environmental factors, can be spontaneous, or are caused by error in dna replication. Mutations can be corrected, but at times they are not. Incorrect nucleotide bases can then be used as a template in the next round of replication, resulting in propagation of the mutation. Mutation in the somatic cell of an individual leads to the propagation of the mutation as these cells divide. The earlier in the developmental cascade at which the mutation occurs in a somatic cell, the larger the spread if the mutation throughout the body.
